Job Summary: Performs a variety of duties such as history and physicals as well as providing care to assigned patients. Assesses, diagnoses and documents findings. Writes medical orders and/or prescriptions. Makes clinical decisions relative to patient management through collaboration with physicians. Assists/performs surgical procedures.


Qualifications

Education: Graduation from a Physician Assistant Program accredited by the Commission of Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program; Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Experience: Minimum 2 years related experience.

License/Cert/Reg: NCCPA (National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants) certification (pending or current). Pending or current certification with the DC Board of Physicians Quality Assurance (BPQA). BLS (Basic Life Support)/ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification.

Skills: Verbal and written communication skills. Basic computer skills and EMR proficiency preferred.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

- Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations. (STAFF LEVEL)
- Prepares patients for procedures, including obtaining labs and informed consents.
- Admits patients, including obtaining histories and performing physical examinations.
- Formally consults with Inpatients.
- Acts as a liaison between physicians, referring physicians and house staff.
- Assists and performs services including (but not limited to):
• CT and Ultrasound guided biopsies
• Thoracentesis and paracentesis
• Tunneled and non-tunneled central venous catheter placement and re-placement (both dialysis and non-dialysis)
• Implanted port placement
• Venograms of upper and lower extremities
• Administration and monitoring of conscious sedation
• Abscess drain insertion and abscess follow ups

Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate. Participates in meetings, serves on committees and represents the department and hospital/facility in community outreach efforts as appropriate.

Performs other duties as assigned.
