The VA Western New York Healthcare Systems, Buffalo, New York, is seeking a Physician Assistant to serve in the Pain Clinic to provide care to Veteran patients at the Buffalo site. -Must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a Physician Assistant in a State, and maintain full and current certification as a Physician Assistant from Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations or a nationally recognized certifying body. -Minimum of 1 year demonstrated competence as Physician Assistant inassessment, physical examination and management of chronic medical problems, including chronic pain, is required. -Demonstrated ability to function independently is required. Additional training will be provided within clinic context. -Computer skills with the abilityto use electronic medical record andelectronic data bases is required. -Openness and readiness to function as part of an interdisciplinary team, within a biopsychosocial view of chronic illness is required. -Willingness to learn current strategies in management of opioid therapy, including risk mitigation strategies and treatment planning, emphasizing non-opioid strategies. Duties: Perform initial histories and physical examinations on new inpatients and outpatients. Provide ongoing outpatient and inpatient care for assigned patients. Assess medication adherence, side effects and functional outcomes as part of renewing pain medication prescriptions, including controlled substances. Order diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, x-rays, electrocardiograms (EKGs), therapeutic modalities. Carry out health promotion and disease prevention activities. Draw blood specimens for testing and performing other comparable lab procedures. Initiate and expedite requests for consultations, and scheduling special tests and studies. Make daily rounds to observe and record each patient's medical progress, update and summarize medical records, change orders when appropriate and notify the responsible physician of significant changes in the patient's condition. Make interim summaries of the patient's medical record. Dictate notes on procedures performed for which the PA is responsible. Provide education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and use of prescribed treatment and drugs. Provide group and individual patient education regarding medication adherence and clinic rules. Participate in interdisciplinary team treatment planning conferences. Participate in both clinic quality improvements activities and education of allied health care trainees. Assess, triage and collaborate in treatment of pain-related behavioral issues.
