Main Function:
The Physician Assistant is a member of the Department of Surgery and carries responsibilities within the department. The physician assistant is also an Allied Health Member of the Medical Staff and an employee of the hospital.

Evaluates pediatric/adolescent/adult/geriatric patients scheduled for Orthopedic Surgery at the facility by obtaining patient’ histories, performing physical assessments, prescribing treatment and medication modalities, and providing appropriate patient education. Seeks consultation with a Orthopedic physician for all difficult or complicated cases. As necessary, obtains medical and pre-surgical data from outside facilities and offices.

Assists surgeon in the evaluation and management of Orthopedic surgical patients.


Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Performs admitting history and physical and records pertinent data.
2. Writes pre and postoperative orders, follow up progress notes, medication, treatment and tests.
3. Discriminates between normal and abnormal findings within physical assessment and consults the house and attending staff for confirmation and/or discussion of abnormal findings.
4. Makes decisions about appropriate management and treatment of patients after initial evaluation and follow up evaluation.
5. Participates in daily patient care as required.
6. Recognizes and manage minor illnesses or problems related to the patient that might occur during hospitalization.
7. Performs clinical procedures including e.g. vein puncture and dressing changes.
8. Writes medication orders for non-controlled, controlled, and non-prescription medications as appropriate.
9. Initiates appropriate evaluation and emergency management in emergency situations.
10. Assists in surgical clinic under the supervision of the responsible physician.
11. Establishes and maintains a good rapport and working relationship with departmental staff, hospital staff, patients, families, physicians and hospital visitors.


12. As identified in the department/unit specific competency plan, demonstrates:
a. The technical competence necessary to provide quality care to age specific population.
b. The ability to assess the developmental needs of age specific population.
c. The ability to use equipment in a safe and proper manner.
