Role and Responsibilities

The Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner (HCP) shall screen soldiers to identify complex physical conditions that may negatively impact a service member’s ability to complete their military duties. Screening may be provided to high-risk populations including service members pending medical discharge due to behavioral or physical illnesses and service members who were wounded or injured as a result of their military duties. The HCP shall perform the services, which a military provider with similar training and experience would be called upon to perform while in a similar duty assignment. The HCP shall be responsible for a regular appointed clinic, compatible with workload and, in addition, provide immediate evaluation and management of emergent problems as they occur. All HCPs shall have the capability to:


· Review and discuss patient responses on appropriate forms.

· Look for recent audiogram and assess hearing readiness status.

· Assess vision readiness status.

· Document profiles that would limit deployment status.

· Advise LVNs as needed regarding vaccinations required.

· Make decisions regarding behavioral health referrals and urgency

· In the absence of medical readiness processing duties, the qualified HCP duties shall consist of activities to include, but are not limited to, the following:

o Skin Pulmonary System

o Head Gastrointestinal System

o Eyes Musculoskeletal System

o Ears Genitourinary System

o Nose Reproductive System

o Throat Lymphatic System

o Neck Central Nervous System

o Cardiovascular System Endocrine System

· Collect and record, in proper format, medical and social historical data appropriate to the patient’s condition.

· Perform a general physical examination. Record the findings in proper format and determine medical qualifications for various purposes.

· Select the most appropriate diagnosis and treat in cases of uncomplicated common illness and injuries

· Plan and initiate proper treatment within the HCP’s defined privileges and the scope of practice of the facility.

· Clearly communicate to other health personnel either orally or in writing the findings, diagnosis, and planned treatment regimen.

· Determine appropriate means of evacuation of emergency patients, prepare patients for evacuation, and arrange for evacuation support.

· Maintain inpatient and outpatient medical records in accordance with MTF procedures

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Physician Assistant

· Graduated from an accredited Physician Assistant Program

· License from a US jurisdiction for the independent practice of clinical services

· A minimum of 2 years’ experience within the last 3 years

· BLS/CPR sponsored by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross

· Clinical experience diagnosing and treating primary care conditions and knowledge of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and related conditions.

Registered Nurse Practitioner

· Graduated from an accredited Master’s or Doctorate degree program

· License from a US jurisdiction for the independent practice of clinical services

· A minimum of 2 years’ experience within the last 3 years

· BLS/CPR sponsored by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross

· Clinical experience diagnosing and treating primary care conditions and knowledge of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and related conditions.
