The incumbent must have one year experience in Cardiology, at minimum. Performs initial histories and physical examinations on cardiology outpatients and inpatients. The supervising physician will review and sign all admitting inpatient history and physical exams and all new outpatient history and physical exams. Provides ongoing outpatient for assigned cardiology outpatients during follow up visits in clinic and by phone and other appropriate means of communications. Screens cardiology consults and outpatients to determine need for further care. Prescribes medications within defined scope of practice under supervisory physician. Orders diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, x-rays, electrocardiograms (EKGs). Carries out health promotion and disease prevention activities. Draws blood specimens for testing and performing other comparable lab procedures, if needed. Initiates and expedites requests for consultations and scheduling special tests and studies. Makes daily rounds to observe and record each patient's medical progress, updating and summarizing medical records, if assigned to inpatient services. Changes orders when appropriate, and notifies the responsible physician of significant changes in the patient's conditions. Makes interim summaries of the patient's medical record. Dictates discharge summaries. The supervising physician must sign the discharge summary. Dictates notes on procedures performed for which the PA is responsible. Provides education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and use of prescribed treatments and drugs. The PA is authorized to perform certain procedures as granted. During the performance of the following duties, a staff physician must be available for consultation by telephone and, if summoned, by physically present at the site of the procedure within a reasonable period of time. The PA is authorized to perform the following duties for patients with a life-threatening situation where a physician is not immediately available. A physician will be summoned as soon as possible: a. Basic Life Support in accordance with current Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation standards. b. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) in accordance with current ACLS protocols, to include defibrillation/cardioversion, if he/she has current documentation of successful ACLS course completion.
