Position Overview:

The Mental Health (MH) Provider provides mental health services at his/her designated school-based health site or Ryan Health site as scheduled including: outreach, assessments, counseling, psychotherapy, and case management utilizing evidenced-based practices for a diverse patient population and consultation to intra-agency personnel in an integrated health care setting. (S)He functions as a team member with interdisciplinary staff and works with community agencies to assure coordinated care for his/her patients. This work is carried out in support of the mission and goals of Ryan Health.


Essential Functions:

  1. Treatment: crisis intervention, brief and long-term supportive and insight therapy. Treatment modalities include individual, group and family therapy. Behavior modification and other techniques included where possible.
  2. Screening and evaluation of patients referred to the School-Based Health Center.
  3. Referrals: responsible for knowing community resources and their availability in meeting needs of patients. Must determine priorities in treatment and be able to decide which patients are more appropriately referred elsewhere.
  4. Home visits: treatment and evaluation are sometimes expedited by use of home visits and are made when necessary.
  5. Function as an advocate in negotiating with other institutions for patient services.
  6. When needed, function as a resource person and liaison to other staff and community agencies.
  7. Maintain professional competence by attendance at professional conferences, in-service seminars and other meetings as assigned.
  8. Evaluate care given in consultation with other team members and individual and peer supervision.
  9. Integrate mental health care with medical and social service care.
  10. Provide pre & post HIV test counseling as needed.
  11. Submit statistical documentation of work performance that is timely, accurate and in conformity with departmental requirements.
  12. Provide counseling services to patients/families to resolve specific, agreed-upon problems.
  13. Adhere to all agency and departmental policies and procedures.
  14. Work collaboratively with high school behavioral health professionals/guidance counselors.
  15. Work with adolescent/young adult population.
  16. Facilitate short-term support groups.
  17. Work variable hours depending on the needs of the program.
  18. Will be assigned to other outreach programs or other sites when school is closed.
  19. Practice accepted infection control measures in accordance with the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens standards and Center policies and procedures.
  20. Attend all meetings and/or training sessions as required.

Other

  • Immediately report any problems or unusual occurrences to supervisor/s.
  • LCSWs supervise students as assigned.
  • Other special projects/duties as assigned.

Minimum Experience and Skills Required:

  • Effective communication and writing skills.
  • Proven track record of organization, attention to detail and ability to respond promptly to requests, anticipate organizational needs, and maintain efficient office operations.
  • Two years of mental health professional experience from a school-based health center.

Education, Experience and/or Skills Required:

  • Master’s in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling or Psychology.
  • New York State License to practice as a LCSW.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).

Education, Experience and/or Skills Preferred:

  • Experience with similar ethnic and psychiatric population, as well as experience with adolescents.
  • At least one year of work experience in a health-related facility.

When school is not in session or is closed, the School Based Health Center staff will be at the main Center or other sites as needed.
