Job Description

Last Update: 5/08/24

To our prospective teammates,

I am the ICU Program Medical Director at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center in Long Beach, CA. I’m proud of the critical care practice we’ve built and welcome interest from practicing critical care physicians looking for part-time or per diem work. I’d like to share more about it, specifically about our people, practice, and purpose, as you consider options:

People
  • We are an established team of physicians.
  • Various members of our team are involved in committees in the ICU and the hospital including the Medical Executive Committee, Critical Care Collaborative, Medical Education Committee, and the Ethics Committee.
  • We collaboratively work together across the unit and occasionally gather for nights out.
Practice
  • Long Beach Medical Center is a 408-bed teaching hospital & level II trauma center. This is an ideal practice for those interested in caring for all types of high-acuity ICU patients and working with residents and fellows.
  • We have a total of 47 ICU beds, with a 32-bed med/surg ICU and a 15-bed CVICU. In the ICU, two intensivists work 7a-7p. We also have one pulm-crit fellow & 4 internal medicine residents. At night there are two internal medicine residents.
  • In the CVICU we have one intensivist that works 7a-7p. Intensivist, “noctensivist”, and IM residents cover all 47 ICU beds from 7p-7a. “noctensivist” is a non-CCM trained physician who is comfortable managing ICU patients and performing ICU procedures.
Purpose
  • We put patients first. Always.
  • A focus on growth and development is a key feature of Sound practices, where we aim to help teammates expand their careers locally as well as within the broader medical group.
  • We are a community-minded team and encourage our team members who want to contribute in and out of the hospital to help make our local community thrive.

Long Beach is a beautiful, vibrant beachfront community located half an hour from Los Angeles. Numerous unique dining and shopping destinations mixed with eclectic neighborhoods, arts and culture, history, family-friendly activities, and endless sports & recreation opportunities in this urban waterfront playground. Enjoy a live performance at the Long Beach Performing Arts Center, home to the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra, or enjoy a fun family day at the Long Beach Aquarium. Catalina Island, Disneyland, and Universal Studios Hollywood are all a short car drive away.
