Under the direction of the Site Medical Director, the AP Fellowship Program Director will be responsible for developing curriculum, coordinating and presenting didactic lectures, and overseeing education and the clinical environment. They will be responsible to ensure appropriate supervision of fellows and the delivery of high-quality teaching, scholarship, and safe patient care. They will also be responsible for the overall administration, management, organization, evaluation, feedback, teaching, recruitment, and faculty development of the advanced provider faculty, fellows, and the overall program.

The Opportunity

  • Oversee the quality of education, curricula, and experiential rotations.
  • Responsible for the overall administration, management, organization, evaluation, teaching, supervision, precepting and, scholarship.
  • Establish the clinical and educational assignments and schedule of the fellows to achieve the educational objectives of the program.
  • Support and deliver an engaging learning curriculum, policies and procedures for the program.
  • Ensure safe patient care at all participating sites and develop processes for granting progressive levels of responsibility for the fellows.
  • Establish the strategic direction and aims of the program and is responsible for the standards, quality, and reputation of the program.
  • Ensure the Advanced Provider Fellowship Programs meet all state, federal, and other regulations and guidelines in accordance with employee law.
  • Oversee and engage with all Fellowship Faculty, Clinical Faculty, and Program Coordinators (if applicable); develop projects, analyze administrative workflow.
  • Regularly review the program to assess the quality of the educational experience and to review the resources available to ensure that maximal benefit is being derived from the integration of the components of the program.
  • Actively participate in recruitment and selection of new fellows for admission to the program.
  • Work to retain fellows within Vituity post-fellowship graduation.
  • Assess performance of each fellow through a well-organized program of a training evaluation.
  • Partner with the Medical Director to select/approve faculty and annually evaluate faculty for their performance in the fellowship program.
  • Direct faculty in their activities within the fellowship program.
  • Remain clinically active.
  • Mentor and coach fellows, advise them regarding their career and educational goals.
  • Administer and maintain an educational environment conducive to educating fellows.
  • Evaluate fellows in a timely manner using competency based/milestone evaluations and via direct observation and other relevant evaluation methods.
  • Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
  • Model professional behavior and effectively lead the multidisciplinary team within the system of care delivery.
  • Assign duties to the Assistant Advanced Provider Program Director and Coordinator as deemed necessary.

Required Experience and Competencies

  • Physician with current, valid American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Certification or eligibility in relevant field/specialty and an active unrestrictive state license to practice medicine by the Medical Board.
  • Licensed physician as a Medical Doctor (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree from an accredited medical school and completion of residency through an accredited residency program.
  • Maintain membership and privileges on Hospital's medical staff and comply with and abide by the bylaws, rules and regulations, and the policies and procedures of Hospital's medical staff where services are being provided.
  • Physician Partnership status.
  • Two (2) years of experience with the education/leadership/mentorship of advanced providers and/or other learners required.
  • Current national board certification required.
  • Current state medical license required.
  • Four (4) years of experience with the education/leadership/mentorship of advanced providers and/or other learners preferred.
  • Clinical and academic experience to ensure effective implementation of the program requirements.
  • Proficient working knowledge of software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook.
  • Ability to facilitate networking opportunities and create an environment that fosters mentorship and promotes the career advancement of AP fellows.
  • Comprehensive and detailed understanding of Vituity policies, educational administration, and hospital policies.
  • Ability to stay updated with the latest advancements, new developments, research, guidelines, educational methodologies, and best practices in the relevant field/specialty.
  • Skilled in strategic planning, organizing, and directing the activities of a program; able to set program goals, coordinate rotations, and manage resources.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively interact with AP fellows, faculty members, and other stakeholders: ability to provide constructive feedback, address concerns, and foster a positive learning environment.
  • Effective collaboration and teamwork skills.
  • Competent at advocating for the interests and needs of the AP fellows within the institution and the broader healthcare community; promoting professionalism, ethical conduct, and patient-centered care; upholding the values of the profession; and serving as a role model.

The Practice

Arrowhead Regional Medical Center - Colton, California

  • An academic teaching hospital with both an established in-house EM Residency Program and an established in-house EMPA training program.
  • EM Residency Program began as an AOA program in 2004 and received ACGME initial accreditation in September 2017. Continued accreditation was granted January 2020.
  • EM residency has 32 residents; large number of residents are from a variety of services/programs, medical students and PA fellows/students.
  • 8 ACGME accredited residency programs: Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, OB, Psychiatry, Surgery, Radiology and Neurology.
  • 4 ACGME accredited fellowships: EMS, Maternal Fetal Medicine, Pulmonary/Critical Care, and Surgical Critical Care.
  • Graduate Medical Education has been an integral part of this hospital for the past 70 years.
  • ARMC is a 456-bed university-based teaching hospital for the newly LCME accredited California University of Science and Medicine (CUSM).
  • The facility is a Level II Trauma Center with a 50-bed Emergency Department that sees 100,000+ annual ED patient visits and handles approximately 3,000 severly injured trauma patients each year.
  • Soon to be Level I trauma center.
  • Located on 70-acre campus and operates as a tri-regional burn center, primary stroke center, and behavioral health center.
  • Numerous primary care centers are located throughout the County of San Bernardino as well as more than 40 outpatient specialty care centers.
  • Backup specialties include neurosurgeons, surgeons, neonatologists, and more with 24/7 on-site coverage.
  • Vituity also staffs the neurology group and scribe program - providing care across the continuum to deliver a coordinated acute care experience for every patient.
  • ARMC is owned and operated by the County of San Bernardino, the largest county in the nation, and serves as the main tertiary receiving center for the region; currently seeking Cardiothoracic/STEMI referral center designation.
